Social Evolution: Policing without Genetic Conflict

چکیده

Insect societies have evolved ways of policing selfish behaviour that arises due to genetic conflicts within the colony. A new case of policing in an ant where colony members are genetically identical highlights the role of colony economics for policing.

competition over who shall reproduce, but because it is apparently more efficient for the colony to cycle between phases of reproduction and foraging. Why cycling should be more efficient than continuous reproduction, as is seen in most eusocial insects, has not yet been addressed. Perhaps it is the only way these ants can control egg production. Interestingly, females of some solitary insects ...

Convergent evolution of worker policing by egg eating in the honeybee and common wasp.

Mutual policing, where group members suppress each others' reproduction, is hypothesized to be important in the origin and stabilization of biological complexity. Mutual policing among workers in social insects can reduce within-colony conflict. However, there are few examples. We tested for worker policing in the common wasp Vespula vulgaris. Workers rapidly removed worker-laid eggs but left m...

Social structure, robustness, and policing cost in a cognitively sophisticated species.

Conflict management is one of the primary requirements for social complexity. Of the many forms of conflict management, one of the rarest and most interesting is third-party policing, or intervening impartially to control conflict. Third-party policing should be hard to evolve because policers personally pay a cost for intervening, while the benefits are diffused over the whole group. In this s...

When Resistance Is Useless: Policing and the Evolution of Reproductive Acquiescence in Insect Societies

In social groups composed of kin, inclusive fitness benefits can favor greater cooperation. Alternatively, cooperation can be enforced through the policing of less cooperative individuals. Here, we show that the effect of policing can be twofold: not only can it directly suppress individual selfishness, it can also entirely remove the incentive for individuals to act selfishly in the first plac...

Specialization in policing behaviour among workers in the ant Pachycondyla inversa.

Most animal societies are non-clonal and thus subject to conflicts. In social insects, conflict over male production can be resolved by worker policing, i.e. eating of worker-laid eggs (WLE) or aggression towards reproductive workers. All workers in a colony have an interest in policing behaviour being expressed, but there can be asymmetries among workers in performing the actual behaviour. Her...
